London Private Equity Recruiting from New York

How hard is it to make the move from New York to London?

I am at a BB investment bank and want to recruit for London. Headhunters are largely unresponsive and I found that cold outreach is working better.

Any advice on making the move? Thanks!

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some insights and advice for your situation:

  1. Headhunter Dynamics in London:

    • Private equity recruiting in London is notably different from the U.S. It is more ad-hoc and unstructured, even for top-tier firms like KKR, Blackstone, and Carlyle. Headhunters in London often engage when there is an immediate hiring need, which can make the process feel slower and less responsive compared to the U.S. [Source: PE Recruiting in London | Wall Street Oasis].
    • The top headhunters for PE in London include KEA, Walker Hamill, Blackwood, PER, and Dartmouth (Arkesden is more IB-focused). If you haven’t already, ensure you’re engaging with these firms specifically. [Source: 20 Most Frequently Asked Questions - London Edition | Wall Street Oasis].
  2. Improving Headhunter Engagement:

    • Headhunters in London may be less responsive if they perceive you as not fully committed or if your preferences are too broad or too narrow. Be clear and concise about your goals, such as targeting MM to upper MM buyout funds, and explain why you’re a strong fit for the London market.
    • Tailor your outreach to highlight your unique qualifications, such as your BB investment banking background and co-investing experience at a top-tier PE shop. This will help differentiate you from local candidates.
  3. Networking and Cold Outreach:

    • Networking is often more effective than relying solely on headhunters in London. Continue leveraging your personal network and cold emailing, as these efforts have already yielded some interviews for you.
    • When reaching out, emphasize your HPI visa eligibility to remove any concerns about sponsorship. This can be a significant advantage in the UK market.
  4. Timing and Patience:

    • London PE recruiting tends to see more activity in the summer and winter, as professionals often leave banks after bonuses are paid. If you’re not seeing traction now, consider ramping up your efforts during these peak periods. [Source: 20 Most Frequently Asked Questions - London Edition | Wall Street Oasis].
  5. Preparation for Interviews:

    • Be ready to discuss your deal experience in detail, including your role, the investment thesis, and why the deals were good buyout opportunities. Prepare deal memos for each transaction on your resume, as this level of preparation is highly valued in PE interviews. [Source: My Path - MBA Banking Associate to PE | Wall Street Oasis].
    • Practice technical skills like LBO modeling and corporate finance questions, as these are often tested during interviews. Aim to complete a quick-form LBO in 45 minutes or less. [Source: Q&A: Associate at MM Private Equity fund | Wall Street Oasis].
  6. Cultural Fit and Market Knowledge:

    • Demonstrate your understanding of the UK market and its nuances. Highlight any connections to London or Europe, such as your girlfriend’s British background, to show your commitment to relocating.

By refining your approach with headhunters, continuing to network strategically, and preparing thoroughly for interviews, you can increase your chances of successfully transitioning to the London PE market. Good luck!

I would say the hiring market isn't particularly active right now; few notable headwinds (ie. new tax rules just came in, tough fundraising environment, poor returns, lag effects of Covid etc.). In addition, would imagine HHs and firms prioritise European profiles - LDN has a presence of European funds that usually seek out people who speak their language (e.g. Ardian / French).

Happy to be corrected on any of the above from those more senior/at different funds, these are just my own observations. Sounds like you've got a great CV and you're getting looks, so with time, I'm sure something will stick... unfortunately just not a great time to be recruiting.

Oh, and yes, HHs over here don't have a great reputation...
