M&A law to buy side?
Hi WSO,
I'm currently a junior m&a lawyer in NYC. Still in my 20s. Jokes aside, Is there a way that I could switch over to buy side finance? What would be the best way to do this? medium term in house legal/business role in tech industry? post pandemic BB IB? EB IB? headhunter for small PE/VC fund?
Former lawyer here. Frankly, this is a very steep climb and that is why so few pull it off even with prior IB experience and modeling skills. Your best bet is to get into IB and take it from there, the direct path is not going to happen unless there is something you haven’t told us. You “can” pull IB off with networking, but you’re more likely to succeed with an MBA, hate to say it.
what type of firm are you with, V5, V50? And what types of deals are you on? Your best time to leave is year four
Former lawyer here working on buyside - it's definitely doable but may take a couple steps and is a slog.
Agree with T30 on moving to IBD as path of least resistance . Depending if you are at a good firm, IBD associate market is as hot as biglaw lateral market right now.
Other question is though do you want to do it, if you move over as a fourth year market paying biglaw or higher to an AO1 role, you will take a pay cut. Buyside ofc is lucrative but you will be grinding your VP / Principal years in your mid to late 30s and it's a fight to make MD / Partner.
