MBA always needed?

Hey! I'm currently a sophomore student wanting to go into investment banking directly after graduating college. I'm in a situation where my parents and I are thinking about saving for a possible MBA (if a company won't pay for it) maybe after having ~3 years in the workforce. Do most major private equity firms, whether it be the higher or lower tiers, require an MBA to become an analyst or get into any of the upper level positions? If this matters, I'm at a USNWR top 5 undergrad school.

It's not required, per se, but in most cases it's just part of the standard career progression in this part of finance. An MBA from a top school provides a very valuable network that comes in handy in private equity. As you will see, most people here will say the value in an MBA is less in the education and material you learn and more in the network and connections you build.

One thing that you seem to be missing is that analyst is the investment banking level for kids right out of undergrad.

Here is the standard private equity track: After 2-3 years as an analyst in banking, you would move to a pre-MBA PE role (if that's your chosen path) for another 2-3 years, after that is when most people leave to get their MBA. After b-school, you are a post-MBA associate, assuming you return to PE.

The post-MBA level in banking is simply called associate, although you can also get there as a direct promote from the analyst program. Once you are a banking associate, you can generally move up the chain without a MBA, if you were a direct promote.
