mm and lmm pe shops - how to find as many of them as possible

I'm recruiting for off-cycle PE associate roles from a consulting background and unfortunately don't directly know anyone who has made a similar transition/whom I could direct this question to. Basically, I want to could get a list/database of mm and lmm funds (find as many of them as possible), so I could start reaching out to people there and try to make connections.

My main interest is MM and LMM shops, and given my strategy background in the TMT space, perhaps funds with a growth orientation, or emphasis on value creation through operational involvement, or are more friendly to consultants would be my best bet/easiest for me to enter.

Ah, the quest for the golden list of MM and LMM PE shops! Here's a strategy to help you swing through the jungle of private equity and land in the right spot:

  1. Networking: Start by leveraging your existing network. Even if you don't know someone directly in PE, use LinkedIn to find connections who might know someone who does. It's all about getting that intro to someone who can lead you to the next branch.

  2. Industry Forums: Wall Street Oasis, the very platform you're on, is a treasure trove. Dive into the forums and you might find threads discussing MM and LMM PE shops. Engage in discussions, ask questions, and share your insights to get noticed.

  3. Research: Use the internet to your advantage. A simple search for "list of MM and LMM private equity firms" can yield some results. You might find some databases that require a subscription, but they could be worth the investment.

  4. Alumni Networks: If you're a consulting background, your firm or alma mater might have alumni who've made the jump to PE. Reach out to them for advice and potential leads.

  5. Directories and Lists: Look for industry publications or directories that list PE firms. Some might be region-specific, which can be helpful if you're targeting a certain area.

  6. Specialized Recruiters: There are recruiters who specialize in PE placements. They often have a good handle on the landscape and can provide you with a list of firms that match your criteria.

  7. PE Conferences and Events: Attend industry events, either virtually or in person, to network and learn more about the firms that fit your interest.

Remember, persistence is key. Keep swinging from vine to vine, and you'll find the right fit. Good luck on your PE adventure!

These may be more unorthodox, but when I was in your shoes:

1. Google Maps method: search for “private equity firms” in the city of your choice, and it will come up with a ton of small shops.

2. If you somehow have access to Pitchbook, you can filter literally thousands of PE and GE shops by AUM, region, etc. Probably overkill though.
