MM Infra PE Shops?

Hello everyone, I am an AN1 at a power/utilities/renewables group, and im thinking about potential exit opportunities once my two years are up. Not rlly interested in MFPE infra but rather MM shops and curious about the names on the streets.

Was wondering if anyone could shed light into the players in the MM infra space. Are there any that aren't super sweaty and comp is still somewhat decent?

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some insights into mid-market (MM) infrastructure private equity (PE) shops:

  1. Core Infrastructure Players:

    • Names like Amber Infrastructure, John Laing, DIF, InfraRed Capital Partners, and Innisfree are prominent in the core infrastructure space. These firms typically focus on stable, lower-risk investments and may offer a better work-life balance compared to larger funds.
  2. Energy-Focused MM Infra PE:

    • ArcLight Capital Partners and Energy Capital Partners are examples of firms that operate on the border between energy-focused PE and infrastructure PE. These shops might provide exposure to both traditional and renewable energy assets.
  3. Renewables-Focused Shops:

    • Capital Dynamics and ArcLight Capital are notable for their focus on renewable energy. These firms often deal with project finance and tax equity, which could align well with your background in power/utilities/renewables.
  4. Regional Focused Funds:

    • Macquarie Infrastructure and Real Assets (MIRA) is known for raising regional funds (e.g., Korea-focused, Mexico-focused) that aggregate into a significant amount of capital. While they are a larger player, their regional focus might offer opportunities that feel more mid-market in nature.
  5. Lifestyle Considerations:

    • MM infra PE shops generally have leaner teams and a more technical focus, which can lead to slightly better hours compared to megafund PE. However, this varies by firm and deal flow.

If you're looking for a balance between decent compensation and manageable hours, targeting core infrastructure or renewables-focused MM shops might be your best bet.
