MM PE or MLB???
I am a junior at top ten undergraduate business school and in the process of looking for a summer internship. I have the oppurtunity to work at a MM PE firm (unpaid) or for the finance division of an MLB team (2016 might be a big year for them). Given my options, I assume I would gain a lot more experience at the PE firm. However I think the MLB internship would be a once in a lifetime (108 years) opportunity and would be a great to talk about in future interviews. What would you guys do?
I think it's your best bet to take the MM PE firm opportunity. The MLB position would be great to talk about, but it will lead to questions about why you didn't pursue investment banking or private equity internships. You're response can either be (i) I had offers, but thought the MLB internship would be a great opportunity or (ii) I wasn't sure what I wanted to pursue and this was a great opportunity. Either way, it puts you at a competitive disadvantage when recruiting for full-time opportunities and could potentially convey that you are not passionate/dedicated/interested in pursuing the IB or PE route. For reference, when I was in charge of OCR at an EB, we would pretty much interview only kids that had PE or IB internships.
Is the MM PE firm located in the city where you go to school? If so, you could potentially do an internship during the school year and the MLB internship during the summer. I still don't think that's the best option, but it could solve your problem, because from your post... it appears you really want to work for MLB.
Best of luck and keep us posted.
Well the PE firm has a better chance of winning the World Series than the Cubs, so I'd go with them
Based on the title I thought this was going to be a "should I go to into PE or play in the MLB?" thread.
Pleasantly surprised.
