Moving from BD at a PE firm back to PE
Hi, I have been a PE analyst for 3 years but have received little to no training and this company does not offer much in growth. I have the opportunity right now to jump into a BD associate role at a growth equity firm. Will this hurt my chances of getting back into a private equity associate role? I intend to go into an MBA next year, so I will have the BD associate role for 1 year before the MBA. Would love any advice you have on how a BD associate role is perceived when looking for PE associate jobs after an MBA, thanks
Quite simply, it would be perceived poorly as it's not the same job. You'd probably fall into the category of little to no PE experience prior to MBA, so unless you're a female or URM, you'll struggle to get a good PE job post-MBA.
Bump
As someone also looking to make a jump from BD to deal team, I can tell you it's very difficult. I have prior boutique banking experience (A2A) and am focusing on the LMM in my non-tier-1 city and it's still an uphill battle.
Do you mind sharing your comp?
I'm underpaid so it won't help you much. It's also highly variable depending on location/fund size. Ballpark, market for VP should be mid-to-high 100s base, a small carry piece, and cash bonus should bring you into the mid 200s all-in cash comp. Try to get your hands on the BraddockMatthews annual BD comp survey, they slice and dice the data based on the aforementioned variables and more.
