need advice - sf to ny for tech/SW

currently an associate 2 at a UMM tech PE shop. fund is doing well/ shop has generally performed in the 30% IRR range the past couple of years. am a strong performer on the team and have a good relationship with the senior folks.

only issue is that the fund is in the bay and goals eventually are the move to nyc. is it worth moving if the circumstances here are good? problem is nyc has limited tech funds, esp those which are performing well (e.g. Insight is not doing well).

If leaving is the answer is the best time after a promotion or right before you get it? what are the optical considerations

much appreciated everyone

Ya as others have kind of said , the big question here is why you want to move to NYC and how badly you want it and what you value …

For example, if you’re super career focused and the most important thing to you is money but the second  most important thing is girls (like I would imagine is true for most dudes on WSO lmao) and you’re not happy with SF hinge, prob not worth … if you’re super close with a family member who has gotten terminally ill and lives in NYC,  maybe different story

As a dude who left nyc for SF to join this industry, i dont really regret it but I sure as hell miss the dating scene … the other thing is I would push your thinking here a little, is there REALLY no tech firm doing well in NYC?  I’m sure you could find one… but yes life is all about compromises, maybe you have to move down market or to a separate niche to make it happen , but if you really want nyc that’s probably not actually the end of the world
