Are their any benefits of doing a placement at a new firm which has been around for 5-6 years rather than an at a typical top firm?

Depends also on what fund they're on. If they haven't raised a new fund, your work will likely be more focused on portfolio maintenance than investing. Typically funds have 10-year commitment, with a 5-year initial investing period.
