Off-Cycle PE Recruitment

Any advice / recent info on off cycle PE recruitment for current first year analysts in IB? Didn’t do on cycle and haven’t seen much info on this yet.

Have heard some processes are likely to kicking off in January - any advice for those who haven’t prepped / thought about this as much yet but want to get started?

Based on the most helpful WSO content, off-cycle private equity recruitment is a viable option for first-year analysts who missed the on-cycle process. Here’s what you need to know and do:

  1. Timing: Off-cycle processes are less structured and can pop up unpredictably. January is a common time for these opportunities to start surfacing, but they can occur throughout the year. Funds often reserve spots for off-cycle recruiting to evaluate candidates with more deal experience.

  2. Preparation:

    • Technical Skills: Focus on sharpening your technical skills, including modeling and case studies. Off-cycle interviews can be just as technical as on-cycle ones.
    • Behavioral Prep: Be ready to articulate your deal experience and why you’re interested in private equity. Highlight any relevant skills or achievements from your IB role.
    • Networking: Reach out to headhunters and let them know you’re interested in off-cycle opportunities. They’ll be key in connecting you with firms that are hiring.
    • Research: Familiarize yourself with the funds you’re targeting. Read industry primers and investing books like Competition Demystified to deepen your understanding of the PE landscape.
  3. Advantages of Off-Cycle:

    • You’ll likely have more deal experience and a better understanding of the industry compared to on-cycle candidates.
    • The process is less rushed, giving you more time to prepare and stand out.
  4. Action Plan:

    • Start preparing immediately. Even if you haven’t thought about this much yet, it’s not too late to get ready.
    • Reach out to your group’s second-year analysts or colleagues who’ve gone through off-cycle recruiting for advice and insights.
    • Stay in touch with headhunters and keep an eye on opportunities as they arise.
