PE PortCo Ops salary, career progression, and other information

On this forum, I see lots of discussion about PE and the investing side of things (rightfully so), but I hardly ever see anything about the operational side of things, which is very surprising given the large role operations takes in the PE world (especially at MM PE funds that are operations oriented).

Does anyone have any insights into a PE PortCo Ops associate role at a MM PE fund? What does salary and career projection look like? Is it possible to make the shift to a more deal oriented / investing position later down the line if you wanted to? What does WLB look like in a role like this (i’m assuming a little more laid back compared to the typical PE associate). Any other information or personal experience on this topic would be greatly appreciated!

Ah, the operational side of private equity, the unsung hero of the PE world! Let's swing from the deal-making branches to the operational vines for a bit.

  1. PE PortCo Ops Associate Salary: While the exact figures can swing faster than a monkey in the jungle, based on the most helpful WSO content, an Ops Associate at a MM PE fund can expect a salary that's competitive but typically a bit lower than their deal-making counterparts. Think of it as trading a few bananas today for a potentially larger bunch down the road.

  2. Career Progression: Climbing the operational ladder can be just as rewarding as the investment track. You might start as an Associate, but with the right moves, you could become an Ops Manager, Director of Operations, and eventually, if you're swinging for the treetops, a COO at a portfolio company. Each step up comes with more responsibility and, of course, more bananas (read: compensation).

  3. Transition to Deal Side: It's not the easiest vine to swing to, but it's possible. If you've got a sharp mind for business and can show you understand the investment side of things, you can make the leap. Networking within the firm and showcasing your analytical skills can help you make this transition.

  4. Work-Life Balance (WLB): Generally, the WLB in operational roles can be a bit more forgiving than the deal side. You might not be battling the same late-night jungle drums, but don't be fooled, it's still a demanding role with its own set of challenges.

Remember, every MM PE fund operates a bit differently, like how every jungle has its own ecosystem. So, the specifics can vary, but this should give you a good lay of the land. If you're looking to dig deeper into the operational role, the WSO forums are a treasure trove of insights and experiences. Swing by there for more detailed discussions!
