Pivot from private equity to film producer / executive

I feel the need to do something creative with my life. After a pretty good pedigree (incl MBA), I feel that becoming a film producer may be one of the only areas in which I can employ my early career business training towards a creative output that scratches the itch of art. I don’t know anything about film production so am looking for recommendations of:

  • broad strokes: where would you start your research on this idea (it is not even half baked, it is quarter-baked exploratory at time of writing)

1) people who have done this before

2) is there a WSO for film nerds

3) what parts of the skillset are transferrable

thanks

Not sure if this is exactly what you wanna do, but have a friend in a PE firm that specializes in movie investments. Really cool job I think you should totally look into that

Most Helpful

I am not even sure if my input is going to be helpful, but I used to work in Hollywood:
- Do you have any form of previous experience in this area? Even basic stuff? School projects, work for non-profits, volunteering, .. / and is this presentable?
- The best in the industry have representation, and the very best also have their own management team around them. Until you get there, you have to represent yourself.
Meaning: you are your own PR firm, your own marketing team, your own management team.
- Transferable skills IMO: structuring of licensing rights, negotiation skills, contract management, capital raises for projects, networking skills are super important, risk management, tax knowledge, anything around PE, in the future also anything more digital, NFT, blockchain

The companies that manage the production have often roles that might be a good fit for someone who comes from PE/banking. Even some form of VC experience would be useful. Being a producer yourself is a very different route and I wouldn't know how you would acquire the hard skills for that. Some skills would be providing leadership, knowledge around media/film production, a vast network of people in your industry and deep knowledge of creative workstreams at scale.
But, fundamentally, /managing/directing/producing media is far more emotional and more about passion than a job in finance could be.

The best location for these roles would be Los Angeles, Toronto and maybe a bit Vancouver, depending on where you'll end up in the production spectrum.

Your best bet could be changing to the TMT arm of your existing firm, focus on media/entertainment and network from there.
Then, attending industry events would be essential and mingle your way into the right circles. You could either help raise funds for producing movies, or start meeting the people who can help you be a producer yourself. I met so many executives, producers and directors at random parties in L.A. .
Educate yourself in the best possible way in this field, you need to know the names, their titles and roles in the industry that is very different from banking. LA is very creative, unstructured, can seem chaotic, but there is a clear framework in the world of movie production, marketing and management.
A lot of people in the industry went to high profile schools, so bankers with a good degree will get the respect they deserve. Hollywood is just a smaller industry compared to the world of global finance/banking, the management teams are smaller and so are the companies and opportunities.

The challenges of producing a movie are often also very different from the world of finance. Writing, getting funding, hiring, producing and managing a movie is incredibly difficult, even for people who have done this for years in the industry.
