PortCo Reporting Software

For my IR folks out there (or deal teams that are hands on with investor reporting…), is there a piece of software you use to automate the consolidation of portfolio company stats (Revenue, EBITDA, Net Leverage, etc) - both internally and for LPs?

I have to imagine a better tool than excel. Wondering if folks have had good/bad experiences with certain platforms (a bonus if they’re relatively cheap). Question applies across all strategies - buyout, growth, venture. Thanks in advance!

Based on the most helpful WSO content, there are a few tools and ideas that could address your need for automating portfolio company reporting:

  1. Standardized Financial Reporting Tools:

    • Some users have suggested tools that integrate with platforms like QuickBooks or NetSuite. These tools can generate PE-friendly financials, including metrics like EBITDA, cash flow, covenant calculations, KPIs, and budget/actual tracking. They also provide a web/mobile interface for quick access to portfolio company data, which could be useful for LP meetings or investment committee presentations.
  2. Audit Tracker Apps:

    • These apps link source documents (e.g., financial statements, SEC filings, bank statements) to numbers in your spreadsheets. This eliminates the "where did this number come from" moments and ensures traceability.
  3. PE/Banking CRM Systems:

    • While many firms still rely on Excel or Salesforce, there’s a growing demand for more specialized CRMs tailored to private equity or banking needs. These systems can help consolidate and organize portfolio company data efficiently.
  4. Third-Party Data Providers:

    • Platforms like CapIQ, FactSet, or Bloomberg are often used for consolidating and analyzing financial data. However, users caution against over-reliance on these services and recommend reconciling their outputs with internal calculations to ensure accuracy.

While Excel remains a common tool, these alternatives could provide more automation and efficiency. If cost is a concern, exploring integrations with existing accounting software or lightweight CRMs might be a good starting point.
