Post-MBA title

What is the typical post-MBA entry role / title at an upper MM or MF PE shop, especially for someone who has had 2-3 years of PE experience prior to business school? If you could provide specific examples (e.g., VP title at ABC firm, Senior Associate at XYZ firm), that would be tremendously helpful as I am trying to negotiate the title that I would return to with my firm ahead of departing for business school. Thank you very much for your help in advance.

The prior comment is a bit simplistic.

Blackstone is one megafund I can personally attest to titling its returning associates 'senior associate' after their business school stint.

Off the top of my head, Carlyle was another major firm I saw friends at with email signatures with that title. To confirm, I just plugged that phrase into LinkedIn and can see a handful of people there out of recent classes from HBS with that exact title and an associate stint at a different firm before b-school.

In terms of advice, I would gear your conversation more toward what sort of carry award you will receive upon your return and whether they want you to do anything specific during your time at school.

In the long run titles really sort themselves out. If your carry allocation is the same regardless of which title they give you, if you are going to get the same base compensation either way, if the partners are clearly indicating you're on the partner track, and if they're telling you to really maximize on your time in school so you are recharged by the time you come back, you have one of the few golden tickets in this business.

Congrats on your pending matriculation, and great job at negotiating a return to the same firm - you've eliminated the single biggest stressor anyone could have in b-school. You're crushing it.

I am permanently behind on PMs, it's not personal.
