Recruiters: how do I communicate my interests politely yet assertively?

Recruiters Complaint N 100000000

I’ve been talking to this recruiter. We ended up talking regarding three opportunities. One is more prestigious and the second ones are less so - all are off-cycle opportunity.

So, once he learnt that I didn’t get an offer - he is pushing this lower end one onto me again and again. Whilst I want to stay in the process for all, I want to let him know that I’m also interested in “better” one and I would want to keep receiving updates there and be in the process. He seems to be forgetting I was in the process at all. He didn’t tell me that I didn’t pass a round or anything - he just mentioned that the process for the “better” one is temporarily halted, however it felt very excuse-like to me?! I’m seeking advice on how to communicate to recruiter politely that I am interested in better one and I want him to sort of update me what’s happening there without him fucking me up and removing me from all processes? I got the sense that recruiters can be a little vindictive correct me if I’m wrong..

P.s. I dealt with good recruiters too so you guys, the good ones, are Stars!

Ah, the delicate dance with recruiters! It's a tricky one, but I've got a few tips that might help you navigate this situation.

  1. Be Direct: Politely express your interest in the more prestigious opportunity. You could say something like, "I appreciate your efforts in presenting me with various opportunities. I wanted to express my continued interest in the [prestigious opportunity]. I understand the process may be temporarily halted, but I would appreciate any updates as they come."

  2. Show Appreciation: Make sure to thank the recruiter for their work and the opportunities they've presented to you. This can help maintain a positive relationship.

  3. Stay Professional: Even if you feel the recruiter is being vindictive, it's important to stay professional. Remember, they're your link to potential opportunities.

  4. Keep Your Options Open: While you're interested in the prestigious opportunity, don't completely shut down the other ones. You never know how things might turn out.

Remember, recruiters are people too, and they're juggling multiple candidates and opportunities. Clear, polite, and direct communication can go a long way. Good luck!

If the better firm wanted you, they'd keep interviewing after your prior rounds. The headhunter isn't blocking you from continuing there if you've already had an interview. Either the process is halted or the firm doesn't want to hire you (or wants to keep you in a holding pattern as they meet with candidates they prefer) and the headhunter is letting you down easy by pretending it's halted. In any event there isn't some magic phrase you can tell the headhunter to get you to another round with that preferred firm.

Having the same issue. HH says he'll put me in the rounds, then all of a sudden it gets "halted." Hard to believe a firm would say "yeah let's hire someone", then two days later after kicking off a process (with a JD and all), say "hold on guys, let's think this through."

It's annoying because this HH did this to me twice now. But I agree with the above comment, it's their way of saying you got rejected. Such is life. But I wonder if it's the firm or the HH who rejected me for the role. These gatekeepers man...

99.9% of the time its the firm. The HH wants you to get the best possible offer as you will be more likely to sign and get them paid.
