Reference Check & Written Offer Timeline

Spoke with the recruiter last week and he said the firm would like to extend me an offer and asked for references. Gave them a couple from my current bank, and neither of my references have heard anything yet. Was wondering how long this process typically takes to receive written offer and finalize everything else? Imagine its highly variable, but curious to hear others thoughts. I have a couple other processes going on and received a soft final round invite from one of them, however, the firm I received an offer with is by far my top choice and I would like to shut down the other processes. Would appreciate any insight here from similar situations. Thanks!

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some insights regarding the reference check and written offer timeline:

  1. Reference Check Process:

    • Reference checks typically occur after the final round and before an official offer is extended.
    • The duration of reference checks can vary, but they are generally quick, especially in on-cycle private equity recruiting where offers can be extended right after the superday.
  2. Written Offer Timeline:

    • The timeline for receiving a written offer can be highly variable. Some firms may extend offers within hours of the final interview, while others may take longer due to internal processes.
    • For example, in some private equity recruiting processes, offers were received within 3-4 hours of leaving the office after the final interview.
  3. Delays and Follow-ups:

    • Delays can occur due to various reasons, such as waiting for final approval from senior leadership or internal changes within the hiring group.
    • It's not uncommon for candidates to wait for weeks or even months for a written offer, as seen in some cases where candidates waited for over two months due to internal delays and approvals.
  4. Managing Multiple Processes:

    • If you have other ongoing processes and receive a soft final round invite from another firm, it's crucial to communicate your situation to the top-choice firm.
    • You can consider accelerating timelines with other firms if you have an exploding offer, which can sometimes expedite the process with your top-choice firm.

In summary, while the reference check and written offer timeline can vary, it's essential to maintain communication with the recruiter and manage your other ongoing processes accordingly. If the firm you received an offer from is your top choice, it might be worth following up with the recruiter to express your interest and inquire about the expected timeline for the written offer.
