Reference checks

What are the odds of not getting an offer because of a reference check? For some context, I wasn’t a stellar analyst but have done well at my current firm as an associate / senior associate and have good references here. The hiring firm wants to speak with someone from my IB group and I’m worried this may ding me. Anyone been through something similar?

Edit: this is for a senior associate role with path to VP if that makes a difference.

What role are you in now? Can't you ask the same reference person for your current role?
