Any advice for someone looking to get back into finance (PE or hedge)? Spent a year in VC and a year in PE before joining a couple of failed startups, and now I want to go back. I don't have the strongest network in PE and the firm I worked with was lower MM, so it doesn't carry much prestige. Should I reach out to recruiters instead of trying to develop a network?

Your story is a fairly unusual one (though probably increasingly common, with the rise in general interest in tech jobs over finance) so not sure if anyone will have direct experience with a similar route.
To some extent, probably depends on what type of PE role you want - equivalent of pre or post MBA roles? If post MBA, then obviously b school needs to be in the picture at some point.
I would reach out to both hh and do my own networking. I would also position the story well so it makes sense ("I was in the buyside for a while but realized I didn't know much about the day to day of running a business, so did this detour and learned xyz about ops so now I think I have a much better feel for evaluating a business holistically" or something)
In venture, this is pretty normal. Usually, associates leave to go get operating experience and then return with the wise words of the operating gospel.
You prob have a very compelling skillset/story for venture. I'd look into large AUM funds perhaps even growth
I am contemplating similar move. Take it as a grain of salt since I have not made it and I am in an emerging market.
A bit of background: 1 year in PE and 1 year in PE FOF and co-investment. Right now a mid-level role at a major tech firm, focusing on product, operations, and strategy & investment. My background was in finance.
Goal is to move to Tech VC. I want to be laser focused on the VC route, and not so much on growth funds. I feel like UMM/MF and HFs are pretty much out of the picture unless I go get my MBA some time.
A note on HHs: I think I framed my story well but it seems that some just don't buy it and they just pushed me towards roles I don't enjoy that much. Had better luck with VCers so far.
