Secondaries PE to Direct PE?
How common / likely is it to move from secondaries PE to direct PE?
Wondering if moving into secondaries will rule out any chance of moving into direct PE down the line, if secondaries doesnt prove to suit long term
This is at the Associate level btw

From secondaries pe to direct pe - interview help (Originally Posted: 10/20/2014)
Hello. Looking for some help out there. I am working in a successful us based secondaries firm. But want to go back to direct private equity which I did before secondaries. I have interviews lined up.
My question: how would you position yourself in this interview? What rationale can you use for going back and forward and still be taking seriously? Is it enough to say you want to be closer to the companies/ investments? What skills from secondaries can you use in direct pe?
any help appreciated
Would think the best way to position it is just explain you miss being on the direct side. You could say you enjoyed secondaries and liked the high-level view and were exposed to a lot of different strategies but miss the granular approach from your previous fund.
Might be tough explaining why you left though. Would try to position as a personal reason (moved geography to be near family, or wanted to try a different type of investing but still stay in PE maybe?) rather than anything related to comp or burning out or whatever the reason may be.
