Startup roles post IB vs. PE
Hey all. Currently finishing up 2nd year at a MM bank with good transaction experience. Generally interested in buyside (mainly PE / VC), but not certain about long term prospects given the wlb. Interested in Corp strategy / Chief of staff at a startup / portco as an entry into the operating side.
Is it advisable to do an associate stint in PE ahead of a potential switch to operating side? Is it better to go directly from banking or will associate stint on buyside provide better opportunities / better learning ahead of moving to an operating role?
Greatly appreciate any insight!
Would advise doing PE first. You'll have more experience under your belt, a better brand and a better skillset - opens up more opportunities and more senior opps (can come in as a level 3+ chief of staff rather than basically the CEO's analyst). Also want to preserve buyside optionality - will be difficult if you don't have at least the initial associate stint. Would recommend a minimum of 18 months.
Appreciate the response. Do you mind giving some color on your career progression and how you are liking your current role?
