Thinking about Independent Sponsor Path

I'm thinking about joining an independent sponsor firm. I view this is as a move to work on larger deals than I'm working on now as well as have a lot more autonomy and responsibility: drive sourcing and thesis research and execution. It feels like higher risk and higher reward than working at a committed capital fund.

I know it's going to vary by background, but does anyone have any experience on what happens to folks who leave the independent sponsor world, especially if they didn't get a deal done? Is that experience viewed positively or not really?
