Thread on PE Placements Based on Background
Hoping to start a thread on PE placements so that more it's more transparent what outcomes are achievable from what background. If you have gotten an offer in any of the last 5 years, could you please comment following this format?
- School: Target/Semi-target/Non-target
- GPA: x.xx, or provide range ("between 3.5 & 3.7")
- IB Group: Top group, mid group, low group
- IB Firm: Don't have to name specific, but would be helpful to name peers (i.e. "GS/JPM/MS" or "BofA/Citi").
- PE Placement: MF, UMM, MM, LMM
- Additional Hooks: diversity, nepo, D1 athlete, etc.
Feel free to skip anything that you feel would make you too identifiable.
Target, 3.8, MM, mid, MF
What MM bank were u from? Would u mind listing it along with some peers for anonymity? Also, congrats on MF!
Nontarget, 3.6, mid-group at MM bank (HL/Gugg/Roths), MM PE
Semi target, D3 athlete, 3.6 GPA, above avg coverage group, fringe UMM
Target, 4.0, MBB, UMM, international/non-citizen
MBB...can i ping you?
Non-Target, 3.9, EB (EVR/MOE/PJT), MF, white male
Do you see other non targets with your background?
PE seems more elitist than IB, so do you have any advice to stand out?
Thank you
just get to the absolute best bank you can and then be sharp and personable in PE. PE cares alot more about soft skills than most people realize and being a normal person goes a long way. But a great bank gets you through the HH screens.

How did you land the mm pe role? Would love to hear your thoughts on moving up market
I think it mostly came down to the experience I was able to get in my first role. I just got lucky staffings and was able to close multiple platforms as an associate so when I was recruiting I had a leg up on most peers. Also the MM is focused on the same sector as my LMM so I came in with good knowledge of the industry. Helps that my new firm isn't super "prestige"-oriented either.
The job's been pretty much the exact same between the two outside of looking at bigger and slightly more complex deals. Have only closed 1 platform since joining though so I'm seeing the other side of the coin now...
