Transition to PE
I led my deal team in IB (worked at a boutique, so it was my director, me (associate), and an analyst in most cases).
Moving to PE, I’m the most junior person on the team where I feel like I’ve regressed on my scope.
Is this normal, and what is the anticipated scope for associates? Should I be leading calls? [First month] in?
Based on the most helpful WSO content, your experience is quite normal for someone transitioning from investment banking (IB) to private equity (PE). Here's what you need to know:
Scope Regression is Common:
In IB, especially at a boutique, you likely had significant responsibility due to the lean team structure. Moving to PE, the dynamic shifts. As a junior associate, your role is more focused on execution, analysis, and supporting senior team members rather than leading deals or calls. This is a natural adjustment as PE firms often have a more hierarchical structure compared to boutique IBs.
Anticipated Scope for Associates:
Leading Calls in the First Month:
It’s unlikely you’ll be leading calls in your first month. PE firms expect associates to first understand the firm’s processes, portfolio companies, and deal dynamics. However, you should actively participate in calls, take detailed notes, and ask insightful questions to demonstrate your engagement.
Advice for Progression:
Remember, the shift from IB to PE is not just about a change in job title but also a shift in mindset and skill set. Give yourself time to adjust, and you’ll find your footing soon.
