Valuation to PE jump

I have accepted an offer to join the valuations team at bank/transactional advisory firm in a tier 1 city and what I think is a solid shop. I currently intern at a LMM PE fund in a non tier finance city and have loved everything about my experience. The types of deals I have observed/assisted on, the team, the location, everything. I eventually want to come back to the this firm after I obtain some relevant full-time experience. My understanding is my role on the valuations team will be very "modeling-heavy." I also understand the traditional route is IB to PE but is it common/possible for people to make a jump from valuation/transactional advisory to PE? Keep in mind I am not shooting for a mega fund or anything. The way I see it is the modeling experience is key to making the jump? Any insight is much appreciated thank you!

It’s not common, but still, possible. I’m currently at a top tier valuations group and trying to do the same. Most PE shops just laugh valuations away, but a handful, mostly smaller ones, will give you the time of day.

To get interviews, you need to:
1) put in the work outside of valuations. Be the best at modeling in your group, learn how to do a 3 stmt LBO in 1.5 hrs, run case studies on the weekend, etc. Anything to smooth out the “gaps” or “rough edges” from not doing IB.
2) network like crazy. You never know who knows who and how they can help.
3) if you have any transaction related experience within valuations (PPAs, LBOs, pre-close valuation work), make sure to highlight that. Communicate that, while you haven’t seen the whole process, you’ve seen all the pieces of the M&A process (only if true).

Hope this helps.
