PE (Post MBA) Role
Hi -- I am an MBA at GSB/HBS, with 2 years of xp as an associate at an MM shop prior. Should I be expecting VP level roles post MBA. Goal is to move up market if possible. Am considering dropping for a year to do Sr. Assoc role and go back to school if I didn't like the fund
Really depends on the fund, but if you're going to shoot for up-market I'd be willing to take Sr. Associate and just focus on getting a seat at a fund you like. You'll be competing with folks who may be doing an MBA after already doing a Sr. Associate year / 3 years of PE and the general trend with how the market has been seems to be pushing MBAs into Sr. Associate roles
I don't really understand the point around dropping out to be a Senior Associate and then going back if you don't like it, that seems a bit convoluted (a lot of the MBA benefit is being with the same cohort and making connections through the shared experience which isn't really replicated if you drop after Y1 and then rejoin with a different starting class imo)
Just recruit normally - you can move up market realistically if you’re prepared, networked, and have decent prior deal experience. Get started on networking before you arrive at bschool and go hard at it throughout your first semester. Time is not on your side and you have to know exactly what you want by the time you arrive on campus. There is no time to explore / figure out what you want to do, contrary to what people imagine MBA to be.
