VP in PE - Exploring HFs... seeking advice
I am currently partner track at an up and coming fund. Think fund II - III, multi billion fund, less than 30 investment professionals. While this may sound like the promised land and a great gig, I have an itch for trying out the public markets - am i falling into the classic "grass is greener" or should i give it a go
I genuinely love investing and to me the idea of 10+ years until I am partner and making real investment decisions is a bit scary... VP through Principal genuinely seem like being a process monkey - albeit a very good process monkey, that is compensated well - and it seems like the only interesting work is done at the partner level while HF is interesting at all levels (once you have your own P&L). Said another way, VP - Principal is 20% investing and 80% process and hedge fund is the reverse.
Realistically it would only make sense for me to leave for a tier 1 hedge fund but I am seeking advice from others in the industry whether this would be a stupid idea. See below for additional context to better inform your thoughts.
- Highly competitive individual that likes to take on risk (clearly)
- tier 2 background (not a harvard, GS/MS, mega fund, HBS guy) more of a non-target grinder
- extroverted personality (know hedge fund people tend to be more introverted)
- independent thinker with ideas that are out of the box
- not super technical (I can do the blocking and tackling) but think its a bit overrated and would never make an investment decision based on an excel model
- under 30 and basically engaged but no depends at this point or financial obligations

You have great seat. Only worth leaving for very lean high performing SM or MM seat with very proven PM with great track.
This would not be a stupid idea at this stage in your career, if this was literally any other market environment. The "risk-taker" in you will have to lean in a bit, as going back to PE if you don't like it is gonna be super fucking annoying in the near-term most likely.
