Wharton Advanced Seminar on PE 2011

Morning monkeys,

Born into a low-key emerging market with an abysmal education system (seriously I never quite get why Americans keep complaining about their colleges, dude at least you have freedom of speech, and that means at least you're allowed to talk/inquire just about everything. Anyway, I digress) , I always find myself learning much much more from online resources, and this would be one of them.

Wharton's Advanced Seminar on PE is available online with full-length videos of the classes and in-depth interviews with guest speakers. I find this tremendously insightful and helpful and hope you guys will enjoy it as much as I did.

Here is the link to the course: http://knowledge.wharton.upenn.edu/pe/ And here is the playlist for the lectures on youtube: http://www.youtube.com/user/thewhartonschool#p/c/…

I hope I can one day get admitted to a decent US MBA program, but that will all depends on how my upcoming interviews with McK go (sweat). And on the talk of consulting and PE, I've always had this question I hope you can help me with.

So I understand that revamping operations and improving revenues/cash flows of portfolio companies are huge part of PE, I was wondering if PE firms bring in consulting firms for that or do they just have their own internal consultants/ industry veterans? And which case happens more often? Do you guys have any insights on Asia Pacfic regions regarding to this?

Hope you enjoy the materials and thanks in advance for the answers!

PE firms focus on bringing in two kinds of people: those with financial expertise and those with operational expertise. The latter ostensibly have industry-relevant experience to improve a portfolio company.
