Caveat that my MM firm is generally on the more casual-end. Both years I've taken 1 full week in summer plus long weekends here and there. We're also generally off the week between Christmas and New Years. Both of the weeklong vacations I was almost 100% unplugged. Still responded to some emails but no real work. Haven't had to cancel anything, but none of my vacations have been during a hardcore deal sprint.

I think I technically only have 10 or so vacation days but no one really tracks it unless you started abusing it.

I took 1 week off in 2 years and worked 6-7 hours a day throughout the entire thing. Granted that was back when the PE markets were red hot, but you will never reliably get real boundaries or the ability to totally shut off when you’re in any deal based job. You might get lucky and get a quiet period, but don’t kid yourself that you won’t have to plug back in if work comes up.
