What Is The Best Path To Private Equity For Me?

I'm looking to attend UChicago next year with a major in economics with a specialization in business economics (I know that business econ is seen as a "cop-out" major by some, but I genuinely feel that it is more applicable to my career trajectory and more catered towards my interests).

What do you think would be the best path for me to work in PE (or HF)?

Would it be best to intern at an IB, PE, or HF firm? And is it recommended for me to do 2 years of IB first out of undergrad (even if my intention is to go to PE or HF)?

Also, I'm curious about how difficult is it to get a credible internship in your freshman year?

Any advice is appreciated, and if you go/went to UChicago or know someone who did, that'd be even more helpful.

Can't speak to a path for PE but there are plenty of "credible" internships that you can get. Anything that will give you experience in finance is a plus and, ideally, by the time you get to sophomore/junior year you can use that experience to land increasingly impressive gigs at a BB or something similar. Have family who attended UChicago Med, they thoroughly enjoyed - hope you do too
