Where do PE bros hang out? - Boston and NYC
Have been in public markets my whole career and recently interested in figuring out how private markets work. I would love to make friends in the space and have been trying to figure out where I can go that has a high concentration of PE people (from lower levels to higher ups).
I'm thinking about places like bars frequented by PE people so I could just strike up a conversation, buy a beer or two, and just really pick some PE brains.

Jokes aside, I think your best bet is going to be networking with people directly. Just shoot alums or 2nd degree connections a LinkedIn message and hop on the phone or buy them lunch. There's no PE bar where you can just show up and reliably have PE guys willing to talk to you. You would waste weeks before finding any meaningful conversation. Most people work very long hours in PE and spend their limited free time on their personal lives
Yep, exactly this. There are places you can go that are more or less guaranteed to have finance professionals, but close to zero will want to talk work with you while they're out with people... reach out directly and you're guaranteed that people who respond will be happy to talk shop

Guess that much is different from public markets.
Some people definitely do, but you’ll put off those that don’t, and I think it’d be pretty low yield overall
Agree with other guy - it's not that people don't want to chat, it's just 1. incredibly low-yield to cold approach at a bar, and 2. people are generally happy to talk, but maybe not looking to do so during their limited free time when they are out with people.
Keep it during work hours and via work channels and your audience will be much easier to find + more receptive
I'm out like 3-4x nights a week when not on a deal and if somebody actually intelligent talks to me I'm down to chat always
