Years to VP
What is the program at your fund if they promote internally (no MBA req.?)
Thought historically it was normally 2-2.5 years associate then 1 senior associate before VP, but have heard lately of some firms trying to stretch that out further.
What is market?
At the fund I worked at it was usually 1-2 years Associate to Senior Associate and from there like 1-2 years to VP, depending on your performance.
Going through my VP class, we have a mix:
1st: 2 years associate, on-time promotion to senior associate, then 1 year senior associate, so 3 years all in.
2nd: 3 years associate at another fund, switch firms, then 1 year as a senior associate, so 4 years all in.
3rd: 1.5 years associate, early promotion to senior associate, then 1.5 years senior associate, so 3 years all in.
4th: 2 years associate, on-time promotion to senior associate, then 2 years senior associate, so 4 years all in.
Incredibly helpful thank you
Generally going to be 3-5 years, with most being 2 as associate and 2 as senior associate. If you're at a smaller firm, it may be quicker, but it's a somewhat standardized process when you get to larger firms. While many firms have started to move away from the MBA requirement, some still want the pedigree so you may see people do 2 years associate, b school, then VP.
Echoing what others have said, it’s usually 4 years (2+2 or 3+1) but have also seen outliers that make you do 3+3…
