Argus Certification

Hi Wso,

I am an undergrad university student working in real estate IB this summer. I really want to move into REPE as soon as I can and am wondering if getting Argus certified would be helpful for recruiting. I am also wondering if anyone has any suggestions on how to get certified for cheap- through my university it costs $600, which is a bit steep for a college student.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, getting ARGUS certified can indeed be a valuable asset for someone looking to move into Real Estate Private Equity (REPE), especially for roles focused on acquisitions where ARGUS is often used for cash flow modeling and valuation of real estate assets. Here's a breakdown of why it's beneficial and some tips on how to get certified:

  1. Why ARGUS Certification is Valuable for REPE:

    • Industry Standard: ARGUS is widely recognized in the real estate industry, particularly in REPE, for underwriting and analyzing commercial real estate investments.
    • Skillset Enhancement: It enhances your skillset, making you more marketable to potential employers by demonstrating your proficiency in using a key tool of the trade.
    • Competitive Edge: Given the competitive nature of breaking into REPE, having ARGUS certification can give you an edge over other candidates who lack this specific skill.
  2. Tips for Getting ARGUS Certified on a Budget:

    • University Resources: While you mentioned the university course is $600, it's worth exploring if there are any scholarships, financial aid, or student discounts available that could lower the cost.
    • ARGUS Software Discounts: Sometimes, ARGUS offers discounts on certification to students or through educational partnerships. It's worth checking their official website or contacting them directly to inquire about any ongoing promotions.
    • Online Courses and Resources: There are online platforms and courses that might offer ARGUS training at a lower cost or even free. While these might not lead directly to certification, they can provide you with the knowledge needed to pass the certification exam.
    • Networking: Reach out to professionals in the industry or alumni who are already working in REPE. They might have suggestions on the most cost-effective way to get certified or even offer to mentor you through the process.

Remember, while ARGUS certification is a valuable skill to have, it's also important to complement it with a strong understanding of real estate fundamentals, financial modeling, and networking within the industry. Keep leveraging all resources available to you, including WSO forums and courses, to enhance your knowledge and connections in the field.
