Breaking into Capital Markets / CRE Lending from Construction Risk Background

I’m a 2025 grad working in NYC for a middle market general contractor. My role isn’t traditional finance, but it focuses heavily on reviewing subcontractor financials, writing credit / risk memos, cash flow projections, and thinking through construction downside exposure. I also work directly with contractors to gather information, maintain relationships, and communicate risk concerns internally and externally.

My credit skills are sharp, but my underwriting experience has been focused on companies not properties.

I’m interested in moving into CRE lending, capital markets / debt brokerage, or commercial banking. I’ve started networking and have sent a number of LinkedIn cold messages, but I’m trying to understand how realistic a move is and how to be more targeted and effective over the next 6–12 months.

Would appreciate advice on:

  1. Companies / Roles to target.
  2. How to pitch my construction credit experience
  3. Whether an ARGUS course / CRE underwriting case reps would help my profile
