Dream Networking Call How to Succeed

I have a networking call tomorrow with an analyst in my dream REPE group. Can you guys give me advice on the caliber of questions to ask to make an excellent first impression?

what's your relationship to this person? Friend of friend? Alumni? Found on linkedin? That really dictates what is possible/best line of action.

Since it is an analyst, I would treat primarily as just informational, you can ask about the recruiting process, but unless you really know this person very well (which it sounds like you don't), I wouldn't push for a referral. When and if you apply for a job there, you can later on let then know, they can then chose to forward internally if they want to.

Do you guys have something in common? Its okay to go into the call just wanting to know more about the persons experience and how they got there. Its always good to come prepared with a couple high level questions about what he does. The point is to get the other person to carry the conversation and let them talk more than you, you won't be asking them for an interview during the first meeting.

Ask the guy about:

  • his experience on deals,
  • what his favorite one is,
  • what ones hes worked on recently that hes allowed to tell you about

  • how covid has changed the strategic or tactical approaches to investment

  • what markets he is bullish and bearish on in his field, any contrarian themes etc.

Basically, be interested in their day to day, if you can move the chat naturally to more off work topics, then do it. It's worth noting that that's hard to do on the phone without coming across super fucking try hard.

Just talk to him and get to know him. Ask him how he got his role, the types of deals he has been working on, what the recruiting process was like, etc. and try to make some kind of personal connection outside of work matters.

It's an analyst, not a director. Ultimately, if you get the vibe he likes you then just ask him for advice on getting a job and ask if there's anyone he can introduce you to who can help.
