Facial hair/beard in Commercial Real Estate
Just curious if anyone has facial hair/beard in CRE. Typically our business is a very old school and from what I have seen, everyone is clean shaven. I've maybe met a handful of brokers who have facial hair. Do you think its acceptable (obviously kept up and trimmed nicely) in our business? Thoughts?
you will never get a clear answer on this. From what I see at most brokerages, if you are client facing, you shave. If you crush it, no one cares (ie. bob knakal)
In industrial it is almost mandatory to have a beard and hunt.
I'd like to nominate this for comment of the year material.
Comment of the year? Lmao yeah ok
I see plenty of facial hair working in development in the south. If you're a junior employee on the sell side, I would play it safe and shave.
I have facial hair (keep a short beard though max is a 2 length). I see plenty as well in the industry.
Unless you work for a high end institutional shop, facial hair is fine as long as it’s consistently well grommed.
In the south if it matters, but I'd bet 30-40% of people have either a beard or purpose-grown stubble. This is universal too - developers, lenders, equity guys, brokers, etc. Beards have been pretty common the last, what - 5-10 years?
Yeah it's fairly common out west too. Not taboo like it was 15+ years ago.
At a major brokerage shop in Texas. There are a couple people in our office that have beards but none of them are client facing.
I work/worked at a PE firm and brokerage firm in Texas. Had a beard the whole time, and nobody cares.
I work on the principal side and borderline look like a terrorist. Answer - as always - is it depends on the shop.
Really think it depends on your confidence and how well put together you look. Again, I do not work at an institutional shop so it may be different. I have facial hair and have never run into any problems over it. Met with many, many, many people at a wide variety of companies out West and it's not uncommon.
I have facial hair too. I trim it daily so it never looks out of place.
In 2019 it is cool for young attractive people to have facial hair in NYC CRE. Especially if you have a receding hairline and/or balding.
Most of the guys at my firm, sell-side western US, are clean-shaven. The ones that do have facial hair or beards keep it fairly short, and even those guys will sometimes become clean-shaven for certain formal events/meetings. I'd say facial hair is fine as long its groomed and on the shorter end.
Doesn't really matter. Clean shaven trend was prehistoric! Today almost every industry allow men with facial hair! It totally depends upon you how you deal with the clients.

Figured I would bump this and ask here..
final round interview with casual type culture firm. CEO even has a short beard and seems like many in office do. I keep a very short well trimmed beard.
Should I still clean shave for this?
I'd shave. It's like the other thread that asked "should I wear a tie to an interview?" There's 0 upside from not shaving, and all the downside, in case someone thinks you should have.
I feel most people in NYC real estate are clean shaven. At least from what I have seen.
I worked in a PE CRE shop on the west coast and I'd say a third of the guys had facial hair, but I had a friend who did the same thing on the east coast in NY and he said everyone was clean shaven in his office. I think that it is different from place to place and you kinda have to feel it out when you go in. Some firms are more relaxed and some are more old school. I believe that it is becoming more of a norm to have facial hair and most places are relaxing their policy/view on it.
