Firms to target for real estate development full time recruiting
What firms should I be targeting right now for networking? I am looking to make the switch from IB to real estate development, anyone have any advice for me. So far I have just been networking with people at some of the big firms like Hines Greystar and TCC any others I should be focusing on? I know real estate development recruiting mainly takes place in March and April so I’m trying to get ahead right now. I have been learning all the excel modeling that comes with it. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Switching from IB to real estate development is an exciting move! I’ve been through a similar transition myself and found that networking with firms that specialize in both development and capital markets helped me understand the full scope of the industry. Apart from Hines, Greystar, and TCC, I’d recommend reaching out to firms like CBRE, JBG Smith, and CIM Group, as they have strong development teams.
Additionally, don't overlook boutique firms or local developers with a niche in specific property types, such as multifamily or mixed-use. In my case, I also worked with CMAConsulting for tailored career advice and guidance, which really helped in refining my approach to job search and aligning my skills with market needs.
As for Excel modeling, you’re on the right track being well-versed in financial modeling will give you an edge. But also focus on industry-specific knowledge like construction timelines, zoning, and land acquisition processes. These are key when you’re looking to make a real impact in development. Good luck, and keep pushing ahead - your proactive approach will pay off!
Thanks so much for your reply this is super helpful info. I will start reaching out to people that work at those said firms.
Thanks.
CBRE does not have any dedicated development teams under their own brand, as TCC is wholly owned by CBRE. At most there is development-related advisory teams and teams working on LP investments in development within CBRE IM.
Does RE development recruiting really happen in March and April? Never heard of this.
Yea it even says it in the bot reply post unless that just repeated what I said I had 2 people that work in the space tell me that though.
Yea recruitment for development isn’t cyclical in the way traditional finance industries are.
It’s always on an as-needed basis since teams are lean. The only time “recruitment” ever happens is for interns, if any.
Related, Brookfield Properties, Landmark, and a ton of more region specific firms are great. Also there are some really dominant local shops. For example in Chicago, a company called Golub is a top dog but doesn't extend its reach far outside the city.
There are probably hundreds of great development firms. You would be better served doing research on where you want to live, then refining a list from there.
