Currently working at a family office PERE firm in Austin, Texas - interested in jumping to Houston for a number of reasons. Wanted to start doing some diligence on private equity real estate firms in Houston. Any ideas of shops in town? A couple that come to mind are Hines (investment arm), Lionstone, and Transwestern (investment arm).
Any other recommendations would be greatly appreciated.
Lionstone seems to be a like a great shop - they have popped up in random publications I read.
Are they PE though, I heard they were more residential.
Lionstone is definitely one of the few REPE in Houston. They do mixed use, office, multifamily, retail. Main ones that come to mind are Hines, Lionstone, M-M Properties. Developers/operators like Greystar and Hanover are big firms in Houston.

Obviously a lot of the institutional owners have assets in Houston, so depending on how you approach it, you may be able to work for one of them, but just be their "local" TX person if you willing to leave the small private PERE world.
This might be a curve ball, but JPM Real Estate Investment Banking has a team in Houston. I know someone who used to work at that location. I know that's different from PE, but not 100% sure what you're looking for so figured I'd share.
if regional offices count, i've heard from a coworker that kkr re has a small group there as well
I can confirm this. very small group though; 4-5 people total in Houston.
Can anyone provide a list of any REPEs in Austin?
Also, in general, I wonder if coming from a Debt Background/Origination's would be a help or a hindrance for REPE?
