I recently joined a new firm with large AUM and is well-respected. I haven't been so thrilled with the type of work I've helped out with and the team hasn't really been the most outgoing/friendly. I have 3 yrs of prior experience in the consulting realm where I was promoted. Ideally I would like to move into more of an acquisitions/investment role if I were to transition.
What is an appropriate amount of time to give this firm until I conclude that I want to move on to not stunt my career growth?
I mean, there's no rule. Provided that you spin the story correctly, and also don't have a resume littered with 6-month tenures, I don't see why a job not working out every once in a while is a problem. If you think the current gig is stifling your career growth, get on with it.
I would recommend tackling the issue head-on though, and say something to the effect of "I understand you may have some concern, and I myself was concerned, with the potentially negative perception attached to my short tenure at XYZ. I needed to make a change because of ABC."
Yeah I mean generally I'd say stick it out a year. That's the best for the resume. But if you have like 3-5 years of experience at only 1 or 2 places then you are somewhere for 6 months and you hate it, then should be OK to leave.
