How to get more interviews

Looking for advice/guidance on how to get more interviews for RE intern roles as things start picking up but I have not had any traction. I've done networking, but is there something to add on my resume that would make me more competitive (does a human actually look at this or is it some AI).

I have two RE internship experiences and have done some training courses/certificates

To boost your chances of landing more interviews for RE intern roles, here’s what you can do based on the most helpful WSO content:

1. Optimize Your Resume for ATS and Human Review

  • Highlight Relevant Experience: Since you already have two RE internships, ensure they are prominently displayed with quantifiable achievements. For example, mention specific deals, projects, or analyses you contributed to.
  • Certifications and Training: Include any completed or in-progress certifications like BIWS, REFM, or RE Finance coursework. If they are in progress, clearly label them as such (e.g., "BIWS Certification – In Progress").
  • Tailor for Each Role: Customize your resume for each application by aligning your skills and experiences with the job description. Use keywords from the job posting to ensure it passes through AI filters.

2. Leverage Networking More Effectively

  • Cold Emailing: Reach out to alumni, professionals, and recruiters in the RE space. Use LinkedIn to find connections and request informational interviews. Personalize your messages to show genuine interest.
  • Coffee Chats: Schedule informal meetings with industry professionals to build relationships and gain insights. These can often lead to referrals or direct opportunities.
  • Follow Up: After networking events or initial conversations, send a follow-up email to express gratitude and reiterate your interest.

3. Enhance Your Story

  • Why RE/CRE: Prepare a compelling narrative about why you’re passionate about real estate and how your experiences align with the industry. Practice delivering this story in 30-second, 2-minute, and 5-minute versions for different scenarios.
  • Behavioral Prep: Be ready to discuss your strengths, weaknesses, and past experiences in a way that ties back to the skills needed for RE roles.

4. Broaden Your Search

  • Target Smaller Firms: If you’re not getting traction with larger companies, consider applying to boutique firms or local developers. These often have less competition and can provide valuable experience.
  • Shadowing Opportunities: If internships are scarce, offer to shadow professionals for a few days. This can help you build connections and gain insights into the industry.

5. Polish Your Application Materials

  • Cover Letter: Use your cover letter to explain your passion for CRE, your relevant skills, and how you’ve been proactive in preparing for the industry (e.g., training courses, networking efforts).
  • Avoid Gaps: If you’re between internships, mention any ongoing learning efforts or side projects related to real estate.

6. Stay Persistent

  • Volume and Consistency: Apply to as many roles as possible and keep networking. Even sending three emails a week can make a difference.
  • Resilience: Rejections are part of the process. Use them as learning opportunities to refine your approach.

By combining these strategies, you’ll increase your chances of getting noticed and landing more interviews. Keep pushing forward—success often comes to those who stay consistent and adaptable!

Are things looking up? Seems pretty dismal out there for most.

Anyhow, it’s just a numbers game. The more people you reach out to, the more people you will connect with. The more people you connect with, the more interviews you will get.

Assuming you’re still a student, professionals are always willing to take you up on a coffee chat if you’re curious to learn more about them or their company. If you’re already in the workforce, this diminishes substantially plus you probably don’t have the time / inefficient. How to navigate you just need to do it and learn what works and what doesn’t.

Anything you can do to make your resume stand out and suggest you are fully focused on a real estate career. Get ARGUS Certified, take getrefm.com certified, thru your school try to get training on CoStar, so case competitions, join the real estate clubs. Go all in on real estate, and continue to network. 2-4 meetings a week with anyone that will meet with you. Jobs in this business are often off market so you want to be first on someone’s list. And just try to get your foot in the door, forget the comp, just get experience even if unpaid
