Is an MSRE worth it?

I have pretty good internships in homebuilding (land acquisitions) and top REIT (acquisitions) that specializes in Class A shopping centers but was unable to land a job in CRE (graduated in 2022), I eventually found an opportunity working in a Specialty Finance (Financial Services) firm and there were lay offs. I have been unable to find a job for the past 6 months. Should I go back to school and get a MSRE at A&M? My resume is pretty solid and I feel like if I combine it with an MSRE and the networking I could get at school I could leverage a pretty good position right after. Would really appreciate some advice.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, pursuing an MSRE can be a strategic move, but it depends on your specific situation and goals. Here's a breakdown:

  1. Your Background: You already have solid internships in homebuilding (land acquisitions) and a top REIT (acquisitions), which is a strong foundation. However, your recent challenges in finding a job and the layoff from Specialty Finance suggest that you might need a boost to re-enter the CRE space.

  2. MSRE Value: An MSRE can be valuable for career switchers or those looking to break into CRE, especially if they lack relevant experience. However, for someone like you, who already has a solid resume, the marginal value of an MSRE might not be as high unless you leverage it effectively.

  3. Networking: The networking opportunities at a school like A&M could be a significant advantage. Many successful MSRE graduates credit their internships and connections during the program for landing top roles in REPE, REIB, or development. If you can secure internships and actively network during the program, it could help you land a strong position post-graduation.

  4. Considerations:

    • If you pursue the MSRE, focus on internships and networking during the program to maximize its value.
    • Be realistic about the roles you might land post-MSRE. Without additional experience, you might still compete with undergrads for analyst-level positions, as noted in previous WSO threads.
    • Evaluate the financial cost of the program and whether it aligns with your long-term goals.
  5. Alternative Options: Before committing to an MSRE, consider whether you can network your way into a CRE role without going back to school. Use resources like REFM, Adventures in CRE, and your existing connections to strengthen your technical skills and market yourself.

In summary, an MSRE at A&M could be worth it if you leverage the program for networking and internships, but weigh the cost and consider whether you can achieve your goals through other means first.
