MSRE vs MRED
I've been accepted into both a MRED and MSRE program. I was curious as to the better outlook for careers. I'm not married to either one, so what are the pros of going into real estate development vs finance? I have years of experience in residential real estate so this would be my introduction into commercial.
So, to blunt, I don't think employers really care that much. There are only slight differences between most MRED vs. MSREs. Thus, just go on which school you like the most and which set of classes you want to take the most. MSRE generally means Finance, while MRED is more blended Finance + Dev/Design, so it's up to you on how you want to specialize. Grads of both will apply for same set of jobs a lot of the time.
That said, I know an MD who runs a office of large commercial bank's CRE lending group (think Wells, Citi, JPMorgan, etc.), he likes to hire MREDs as the finance stuff is easier to teach than zoning and other development items. That is just one guys personal opinion, but it has always stuck with me.
