Principal Side Marketing - What Works?

Sup -

What are some things you guys are doing to market yourself/company/brand? What has worked in the past (tough to quantify, I know)? Aside from the standard dinner/drinks/etc, what are some cool events or otherwise that were a success?

IS Guys - what's your take? What do you like to see out of your principal side counterparts from a marketing/networking perspective?

I'm not located in the market(s) that I cover so am planning a 1-1.5 week business trip making a rounds old relationships/forming new relationships. The goal is to see what everyone is working on and shares the same in hopes of prying some quiet(er) deals free.

As an add-on, for those who have a similar situation as I do (not located in market(s) covered), how do you maintain a "presence"?

Not sure if this is what you’re thinking, but consider an email newsletter. Works for both sides and is a nice light way to stay in touch.

I know we all get bad ones, but yours doesn’t have to be lame. I usually do a short monthly one, and make a lot of contacts through this because it serves as a reminder that I know what I’m talking about, and I’m happy to connect. Creates a virtuous cycle. Just make it:

  • short
  • consistent
  • unique to you

Whenever I don’t send it (oops) I legit have a few people email something like, “Did I miss it the December email?” I know it sounds overly simple, but you’d be surprised how many people don’t know about your newest projects/what you’re currently up to/what you just closed on (but would like to know).

When in doubt, just write up a 1-2 paragraph summary of deal flow (yours or the general market), and mention a new bar that opened up in your market. All of a sudden you’ll get an invite to chat about the market, and maybe grab a drink at the bar you turned them on to. Great way to re-break the ice with contacts you may have fallen out of touch with.

Best part is you don’t have to be there in person to deliver it.

Started with contacts, but then people started forwarding it or making intros to their friends. “Hey Bob, Edifice sends out that email. Edifice, Bob is in your market. You two should connect.”

Sounds like you have enough contacts to get started. Perfect January newsletter (in one paragraph if you want):

  • you’re looking to make moves in new market
  • here’s what you were up to in previous market
  • ask who you should meet

Start the email list with 10-20 contacts you know will be receptive.

It’s an organic but also scalable way to market yourself/company/brand. Marketing dept asks how I have no unsubscribes/high open rates and it’s because it’s not spam (unlike their templates). It’s short and usable, and the list is targeted.

What will your role be in the new market?

Got it.

To provide some further context, this isn't a new market for my firm, my coverage was recently expanded. In short, the previous acquisitions guy just wasn't getting it done... So yes, we (I) have a great base contact list to get something like this started.

Do you just BCC everyone and copy yourself on the email or how are you distributing the newsletter?

I'll be leading acquisitions in this market.

Nice man, congrats on the expanded responsibilities.

I’ve used Mailchimp and Campaign Monitor. Both are great. Mailchimp is free up to 2000 recipients (but if your list is over a few hundred people I would suggest culling that immediately). Don’t BCC, too many little things to go wrong.
