Relocate or Stay

Hi Monkeys,

Have any of you relocated for a job to an area you don’t know well, and has some undesirable qualities? What’s been your experience?

I have a tremendous opportunity to relocate for a great role, very strong pay, but (unfortunately) in a tier 3 city which I’m not super excited about.

Have any of y’all been in a similar situation?

You bring up good points, moving away from friends is always hard but sometimes sacrifices have to be made in order to progress career wise and on a personal level.

I would take the offer and never look back! Embrace it with the best mindset and make most of what you have.

Plus, moving relatively “close” to home is always nice

Two hours? That’s nothing. You could go home every weekend if you wanted. In some cities, you could move that far and still be in the same MSA (eg Newport Beach to Santa Monica).

I have moved twice (across the country) and it has its pros and cons. It’s so situational though. There are times when I’d never recommend moving as far as I did, and times when I think you’d be stupid not to. It depends on the following:

1) How much you love your hometown / if you’re living life to the fullest there. If you just hang out with your high school buddies and smoke pot on the weekends, I don’t really consider that a super desirable situation to stick around for. If you have a vibrant social life, that’s different.

2) How good are the career prospects in your current city? Is it NYC / SF / Chicago quality or are you leaving a Charlotte / Atlanta? It might be tough to take such a huge step down eg NYC to Jacksonville.

3) How good is your current job vs the new job?If you’re leaving a no-name brokerage shop to work at multibillion $ fund, that’s a big deal. If you’re only going to a slightly better job for an extra $10k? Completely different situation.
