Roasted in Unofficial Interview = Best Thing That Can Happen To You

Been networking like crazy and got the opportunity to sit-down with the head of Development for a great company. Knowledgable, wanted to help, and provided lots of resources for self improvement. Absolutely demolished me when it came to modeling and my confidence in the full acquisitions stack of skills.

I am shooting for market analyst or REFM analyst position so that I may create a wealth of knowledge and be the best that I can be in this market. I AM NOT from a finance background but I have Development and Business Administration degrees. I thought I was well prepared with REFM certs and time spent learning market statistics. I was HUMBLED very quickly. I am not upset, I am not depressed, I am not even sad. I now know the level of complete understanding needed when it comes to REFM and Marketing Analytics to add value to a company right away. I am way outgunned at this point, but motivated to better outfit myself, and re-apply.

TLDR; Probably a Shit-Post but feeling inspired and hoped it could help someone else too. Back to the grind.

You have the right attitude for sure. In fairness, actually "doing it" for a year or more makes you proficient. Projects in college courses, REFM, and other online training type programs are one thing (and worthwhile for sure), but not the same as having to do day in and day out. Still, how did he "demolish" you? Like asking questions or did you actually have to model something on a computer?

He didnt ask me direct questions, instead we together walked through current projects he was looking at more in a friendly conversation type of way and just walked through the thought process of how it should be modeled. But what was "demolishing" was how his brain just looked at the model and thought of extra ways to format and include construction cash flow breakdowns. His summary was also from another planet it was soo good, no BS exactly what you needed. Very cool to see a man who probably never models anymore craft such a beauty.

Hope you realize that a pretty common interview tactic is to ask you questions until you're completely stumped. That's how interviewers assess your level of knowledge. Nobody expects you to get every answer 100% correct. It's about getting the fundamentals and answering questions you don't have the answer to in an intelligent way (e.g., "Well.. I'm frankly not too familiar with that, but I do know X and given Y I'd think about that like this...").
