Should I stay or should I go...
Started an IS internship a few weeks back, it’s a small shop in Philly, but they’re a strong team. Anyway, I can stay at this shop all through school (currently a junior) and start full time with them when I graduate. The problem is, I want to be in development and am talking to a few people right now for an internship during the summer. So should I leave a basically guaranteed job for something that may not come? Also would like to be in NYC not Philly. They have an office in NYC as well, but it isn’t as strong as the Philly one.
I think I have an answer already in my head, but want to hear some more opinions,
Have you ever heard the saying... You don't have to marry the first person you date?
So, I don't see why you cannot interview and even do another internship while in UG and still keep your long-term options open with this firm. Especially if the internship you get is not with a competitor but with a firm that could actually be a client. I would think this would up your value long-term in IS, thus they should not care and even be supportive (a lot of that will come down to how you frame/sell it). You can take the summer internship and resume with them in the fall. Could they tell you to F off, I guess, but that would give me concerns overall.
Even when its time to get a FT job, you shouldn't feel obligated to this firm, they may not opt to keep you at the end of the day (nothing guaranteed in this world). You should still interview around, even with competitors, make the best deal you can.
