Stepstone Acquisition Team

Recently saw Stepstone RE raising a huge fund for their GP led secondaries strategy. I know they are searching for acquisitions and portfolio associates and up. Does anyone have insight into the comp and WLB? How does their acquisition team compare to other shops? How is their reputation and exit ops?

StepStone Real Estate primarily focuses on fund investments and recapitalizations, which might differ from traditional acquisitions-focused shops. While specific compensation (comp) and work-life balance (WLB) details for their acquisitions team aren't explicitly mentioned in the WSO dataset, here are some insights based on related discussions:

  1. Reputation and Strategy: StepStone's strategy in GP-led secondaries and fund investments is well-regarded, but it may not provide the same level of direct deal-making experience as a traditional acquisitions role at a REPE firm. This could potentially pigeonhole professionals if they aim to transition back to a pure acquisitions role.

  2. Work-Life Balance (WLB): While no direct mention of StepStone's WLB is available, firms with a focus on fund investments and portfolio management often have a slightly better WLB compared to high-intensity acquisitions shops. However, this can vary depending on the team and deal flow.

  3. Compensation: Compensation in real estate finance varies widely by firm and role. For context, analysts in REPE firms typically earn $60-$80K base with bonuses of 15-20%+, while associates can range from $110-$130K+ base with higher bonuses. StepStone's comp structure would likely align with similar fund-focused firms, but specifics aren't detailed in the dataset.

  4. Exit Opportunities: Working at StepStone could provide strong exposure to fund-level strategies and portfolio management, which might be advantageous for roles in fund management or secondaries. However, transitioning to a traditional acquisitions role might be more challenging due to the nature of their strategy.

If you're considering StepStone, it’s worth evaluating how their strategy aligns with your long-term career goals, especially if you're aiming for roles in acquisitions-heavy shops.

Previously worked at the company in another group and can provide some general insight.

Comp is market with similar base to banking but lower bonuses, more towards the 30-40% region. Carry is only allocated to VP or higher as is standard of American firms. People are generally nice and WLB is good, don’t expect to work past 11pm most days.

Exit opps are limited I’d say, since the seat tends to be the exit opp but the reputation is solid.

Hope that helps!

I spoke with them last year on a acquisitions role (senior analyst I think). Recall comp being in the £130 AIC (London) but I really can't remember. I have noticed that they have been marketing these same positions for over a year now so not sure how serious they are on actually hiring.
