Switching into RE
Hey monkeys,
I am currently working at a top BB bank in their Private Banking division in my first year out of undergrad. I’ve been there for around 5 months and have not been enjoying the work that I have been doing. I don’t see myself being an advisor and I’m looking for something more analytical and intellectually stimulating, which leads me to RE.
My senior year of undergrad, I worked part-time as an underwriting analyst at a smaller brokerage for 6 months where I learned directly under the MD. I worked on debt transactions as well as advised acquisitions for clients. It was a steep learning curve as I was expected to model right away and write up investment memos, but I enjoyed the work and learned a ton from this experience.
Fast forward to now, I am considering leaving my current role and moving into an acquisitions/capital markets role where I can keep learning and set myself up for a successful career in the industry (ideally REPE). I have begun connecting with people on LinkedIn in the area I am in (major city on West Coast) and want to start reaching out to build up a network. I’m also brushing up on my financial modeling and RE knowledge by reading books, industry reports, and taking financial modeling courses online.
Has anyone gone through this kind of switch? How long should I stay at my current role? Any shops to target that would be more accepting towards my situation?
I appreciate any feedback!
