Tenant vs. Landlord Leasing

Hello, I am an SMU grad student going into the Dallas market. My family is from the area and had me go and meet with some of their friends that have been in CRE for a long time and have been very successful in it. They recommended that I start out in leasing, learn the business, get to know the movers and shakers, and then transition to buy side. End goal is to buy my own deals and invest my own money. Within the leasing space their is two sides of it and I wanted to get y’all’s opinion on which side is better.

I am going to go to a large institutional firm (think JLL/CBRE/C&W). I want to get as many reps as possible. I’d like to know:

1) Do you agree that leasing is the best place to learn the ropes? Rather than an analyst position on the numbers side? 2) How long do you think I need to stay in leasing before I transition out? 3) Where is there more money in general - Tenant or Landlord Leasing?
