To all CRE brokers out there
Hey guys,
I’ve been working at a decent CRE brokerage firm in one of the boroughs of NYC for about 7 months now. (Brooklyn, Queens, Bronx, etc …) Although I make descent amount of money with good life-work balance, my office lacks the environment that I seek, and it’s been driving me nuts for past couple of months. I really think brokers who work here are great guys and we get along very well, but they don’t have that financial rigor nor competitive sprits that can be found in other bigger shops in Manhattan, so I am seriously hoping to lateral to different firms.
I started to make list of brokers/financial analysts at other bigger brokerage firms like JLL, Cushman, CBRE etc., but I’m very hesitant to send job inquiry emails. As you probably know, CRE is a small world and it seems like many brokers(including my boss) know other brokers at different firms pretty well.
How should I go about lateraling to rival firms? Should I just straight up call them? Contact alumni? (I went to big state school UMich, UVA, UCLA etc..)
Also, what kind of skillset should I convey to bigger firms in order to get selected for an interview? What position is good place to start if you aren’t really into hardcore sales?

But seriously, any combination of talking to alumni, cold-calling, and so on is good. Yeah, it's a small world, and you're probably right that some of them know your boss, but that could actually help you. Nobody is going to rat on you. There's sort of an unwritten understanding that that would be silly or uncalled for.
