USC Transfer for a career in Real Estate?

Should I transfer from UNC - CH to USC for a career in real estate? I plan on moving to LA after college to land a gig at a good brokerage / firm. Currently live in NJ, hate it here lol

It'll probably be tough to convince the parentals through an anonymous internet forum so I would just run them through Lusk's website and through LinkedIn to show how strong the program is as well as how influential the alumni presence is. USC has their hands in everything commercial real estate in LA - it'd really put you in a strong position to go there.

Are you in Kenan Flagler? They have a great real estate program and reputation and pretty strong network (yes, more north/south east centric). If you are in some other part of UNC-CH, then maybe easier call.

USC is legit strong in SoCal, so I get it. I also get why you hate NJ lol, so maybe you actually want to go to school in SoCal??? Nothing wrong with that, if that is part of the motivation, embrace it!

Haha yeah, it is apart of the motivation! I actually just got into UNC -CH and I love the school - there’s no denying it - but I really want what’s best for my ideal career path you know? And yes, I’ve lived in NJ my entire life. My conservative family likes to “stick together” but I think it’s better if I take a chance and explore the world a bit more. Anyways, thanks for the response!

Personally, I think this is a great time in your life to try out SoCal, you may not like it as much as you think. Getting a USC degree while there makes it worth your time. Take the adventure! You will never feel bad you didn't live in the Raleigh-Durham area of NC, but you may fucking hate life if you end up taking a job in NYC (where I'd suspect a bulk of the OCR at KF is directed) and never do the SoCal thing.

As final point. USC vs. UNC-CH is not a big enough of difference to really ever suspect it will actually make a difference for a career (esp. for UG), both have great reps. This may sound old school, but if you want to really learn real estate, you have to be in a real city. LA qualifies more than RD (but RD is up and coming big time to be fair).

If you're sure about transferring, you could try throwing in apps to Wharton and Cornell. They're both big names in the industry and you get flexibility. I personally know a handful of people from both who moved over to the west coast for that sweet Cali sunshine. USC's great, but it's not much better than UNC. Seems like a lot of work for not much upside. That's my take.

It’s more so for the alumni network and actually knowing people in the area. I hear it basically runs SoCal so it might be a solid move you know? (Also an upward trend in terms of ranking & prestige)
